The Difference Between High Melting Point Paraffin Wax and Fischer-Tropsch Wax ?

The Difference Between High Melting Point Paraffin Wax and Fischer-Tropsch Wax ?

High melting point paraffin wax is generated from crude oil by distilation, then solvent dewaxing and hydrogen refinery. The melting point can reach 72℃.  Oil content can be controlled below 1%.  For some grades, oil content can be less than 0.5%. Fischer tropsch wax is synthesised in the Coal-to-Liquids process.  The melting point can reach 115℃. It's harder and suitable for high working temperature.

How Can You Reduce the Melting Point of Paraffin Wax?

wax selection wax king hornor

In fact, paraffin waxes with low melting points are manufactured. They just aren't called "paraffin wax". For example, paraffin wax with a melting point close to human body temperature is commonly called "petroleum jelly" or "Vaseline". Different name but essentially the same thing. It's the mixed hydrocarbon chain molecules. The shorter the range of carbon chains is, the lower the melting point is.

Paraffin wax with the melting point below room temperature is called "mineral oil". By mixing (melted) paraffin wax with either of these two substances (petroleum jelly or mineral oil) you would create a paraffin wax with a lower melting point.

High temperature paraffin wax FAQs

Does paraffin wax contain water?

Paraffin wax is insoluble in water. In application, there's very few cases that small water droplets were seen on the surface in the melted paraffin wax. This situation may be related to paraffin forming and water vapor condensation during use. The standard Test Method for Determination of Water in Petroleum Products is ASTM D6304.

What is wax melting point?

The melting point of paraffin wax refers to the temperature at which paraffin wax changes from solid to liquid under certain pressure. Standard test method is ASTM D87. It is particularly applied to petroleum waxes that are rather highly paraffinic or crystalline in nature. The melting point of paraffin wax will affect the processing and performance of the product.

What is the specific heat capacity of paraffin wax?

Paraffin wax has a specific heat capacity of approximately 2.1 kJ/(kg*K), with an enthalpy ranging from 180 to 230 kJ/kg. These properties contributes to an outstanding energy storage density.  Paraffin wax is stable chemically, has small volume alterations and low vapor pressure after melted. Additionally, they have the low thermal conductivity. These characteristics make paraffin waxes ideal phase change materials (PCMs) for latent heat storage systems.

What's the purity test of Paraffin Wax?

Paraffin purity refers to the content of petroleum hydrocarbons in paraffin wax. Paraffin wax with high purity can improve the quality and performance of the product and reduce unnecessary cost. The commonly used detection methods include gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, infrared spectroscopy and so on.
