Analysis of Lubrication Effects of Polyethylene Wax

What is polyethylene wax?

Polyethylene wax (PE wax), also known as polymer wax, is abbreviated as PE wax. It is widely used due to its excellent cold resistance, heat resistance, chemical resistance, and wear resistance.

In normal production, this wax can be directly added to polyolefin processing as an additive, which can improve the gloss and processing performance of the product.

As a lubricant, it has stable chemical properties and good electrical performance. Polyethylene wax has good solubility with polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene wax ethylene, ethylene-propylene rubber, and butyl rubber. It can improve the fluidity of polyethylene, polypropylene, ABS and the mold release properties of polymethyl methacrylate and polycarbonate. Compared with PVC and other external lubricants, polyethylene wax has a stronger internal lubrication function.

What is the function of polyethylene wax?

Texture and matte effect

When the coating is cooled, the polyethylene wax particles separate from the coating solution and migrate to the surface of the coating, creating a pattern and matte effect. In powder coatings, different micro-powder waxes have different effects on reducing gloss, which can be selected according to the gloss requirements.

Scratch resistance, wear resistance, anti-polishing, and anti-printing

The fine polyethylene wax exists on the surface of the coating in a dispersed particle manner, reducing the coefficient of friction of the coating. When an object collides with the surface of the coating, the sliding tendency is greater than the scratching tendency, reducing the tendency of the coating to be polished and maintaining a low gloss and low durability.

By adding 0.5-1%, the dynamic coefficient of friction of the coating can be reduced from 0.35 to 0.25. When other objects touch the coated product, they sometimes leave black marks on the coating. Adding polyethylene wax to the film can reduce this tendency.

Influence on pigment dispersion

The micro-powder wax enhances the wetting and dispersion of pigment agglomerates, increasing the color strength of the pigment. Adding 0.5%-3% can increase the color strength of the pigment by 10%-30%.

Influence on extrusion output

The micro-powder wax reduces the screw torque and adding 1% can increase the extruder productivity by 5%-25%.

Smoothness and texture

Polyethylene wax gives the coating excellent texture.

Water resistance

The wax-containing coating has better water resistance.

Substrate wetting

The polyethylene wax particles separating from the coating can help the gas in the porous substrate to escape.
